Julie Rogers
A lifetime resident of New Jersey, Jules is an
abstract artist who began her career as an arts educator. Jules is an
elementary teacher at the advanced academic institution Mendham Country
Day School, located in Basking Ridge, NJ. For the past nine years, she
has been teaching General Music, Chorus, Band, Art, and Dramatic Arts.
She holds a Bachelor of Music in Education degree from Mercyhurst
College's D'Angelo School of Music. After graduating in 1999, she
continued her education at the School of Visual Arts in NYC where she
studied drawing, painting, collage, and illustration. She is a
classically trained flutist who currently plays with the New Jersey
Intergenerational Orchestra and teaches privately. In addition, she is
currently studying silversmithing with Master Jeweler Larry Cove at the
DuCret School of Art in Plainfield, NJ. She creates unique silver
pieces as well as intricate macrame and beaded jewelry. Both her
teaching and musical background have had great influence on her art and
jewelry.
Jules’ works are contemporary, abstract acrylic paintings and
colored pencil drawings that combine the lines, shapes, and colors seen
in nature with the history and meaning of manmade symbols. Each piece
begins with choosing a simple natural element, and then a recognizable
form (hieroglyph, adinkra symbol, human form, etc.) is drawn onto the
paper. Then, lines are drawn in and around the object until the picture
plane is filled. It is then that each line is given its own variation
of thickness. The colored pencil allows for great detail in the
drawings and the acrylic paint allows for a more natural flow with a
brushstroke as well as utilizing different textures.
Her nature inspired works come from having grown up spending most of
her time outdoors climbing trees, hiking, running, exploring, and
forever searching for that perfect view. She chooses to paint in an
abstract style because it enables her to focus on the simple essence of
emotions felt while experiencing nature.

Julies' Charity
A portion of the profit from these paintings sales will go to the W. Paul Rogers Scholarship Fund. It was established in
2000 for students who would not be able to attend Mendham Country Day
School due to financial restraints. The fund began when W, Paul Rogers,
one of the founders of the school, suddenly passed away. W. Paul Rogers
grew up in Bordentown, N.J. and faced financial obstacles himself when
trying to get an education. With determination and hard work, he became
a student at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on full scholarship where
he received his degree. His aim in starting Mendham Country Day School
with his wife, Barbara Rogers (who was also a full scholarship student
at both Syracuse University and Columbia University), was to make the
best education possible available to everyone.
