About Jonathan Small
"These are paintings of objects. I select what I paint intuitively, trying not to over-think the subjects of the paintings.
I
attended a number of art schools during the 1970s, but became
frustrated with their focus on abstraction. While I certainly
appreciate good abstract art, I had no confidence with expressing
myself in that manner. I more or less put my painting on hold and for
the next thirty years I followed a number of pursuits: I managed a
record store, owned a mail-order business for punk rock and underground
experimental music, I recorded and performed using tape loops and found
sounds, and I managed a surf and windsurf shop.
Around 2004 I
became interested in researching my family history and one ancestor in
particular who caught my interest was my great great grandfather,
Stephen Alonzo Schoff (1818-1904). He was one of the best American
engravers. His work was featured on U.S. currency and he was well known
for his engraved portraits, including Ralph Waldo Emerson, Walt
Whitman, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Nathanial Hawthorne, among many
others. I could go on and on about him, but suffice it to say here that
he has given me the inspiration to get back into painting again.
I’ve
been around long enough now that I am confident painting what I like
and I don’t care if my work is disliked by someone who prefers abstract
or minimalist or whatever the current style du jour may be. If I can
make a few things which are liked by a few people, then I’m satisfied."
