Janet Tanguay
Artist’s Commentary
The Japanese have a concept they
call wabi-sabi that speaks to the art of imperfection, and/or the willingness
to accept things as they are. Wabi-sabi
is really about process, not the end result.
Wabi-sabi requires that we take time to pay attention to
imperfections. To practice wabi-sabi
means to accept nature’s process. Some
of the materials in my paintings include broken drumsticks, a rusty saxophone
and a violin without strings. These
things could be dismissed as ugly and without value, but wabi-sabi has taught
me that we are all in a constant state of change, and to value them. Spend some time with the broken items to look
at the details. Notice the curves, the
crevices, the angles, the shading, the indents, the drips and the
blotches. The texture in my art matches
the texture of my life. It’s not always
simple, easy, clean and bright.
Namaste is my favorite word. Namaste means “I honor the light within
you”. Namaste is how I approach my
art. I take a smashed guitar, a dented
trombone slide or a crooked violin bow, and I approach them with hope. I do the same with people. As a result, my life transforms just as my
art transforms. Enjoy!

positive environment for everyone.

Organizational Values
Acceptance
Inclusiveness
is one of our mantras. We are rooted in the belief that everyone should
be treated like a human being regardless of their sexual identity,
gender, or race. We as an organization will not turn any one away who
asks for help. We will show them compassion. And, in recruiting staff
and volunteers we will reflect the diversity of our community.
Commitment
We
promise to deliver the best 24 hour 7 day a week telephone counseling
for youth in crisis. We promise to create a safe space, through our
helpline and online, for LGBTQ youth. We promise to deliver our message
of suicide prevention in schools throughout the country. We promise to
hire a highly qualified and professional staff and providing them with
incentives. We promise to operate our board, our committees, our
helpline, our offices and our events with the utmost integrity.
Innovation
We
have been and will continue to be pioneers in reaching out to youth in
crisis; whether it's in schools, on the helpline or online. We will be
stewards in nonprofit fundraising (events, Circle of Hope, direct mail
campaigns). We will be innovative in our recruiting and retention of
staff, volunteers, and board members.
